Tools and products I actually use in the build. Honest takes — the good and the bad.
Rolling workbench that fits in the back of the van. Solid surface for assembly work and storage drawers for hardware.
Needed a work surface that could move between the van and garage. Heavy but stable — the casters lock well enough that it doesn't shift during cuts.
Contact adhesive for mounting insulation, fabric, and foam. Permanent bond once it's down — you get one shot at placement.
Used it for Thinsulate and headliner fabric. Strong hold, dries fast. Downside: aggressive fumes, need ventilation and a respirator.
Pop-up canopy that attaches to the van's rear doors. Instant covered patio for cooking and sitting out of the sun.
Sets up in 2 minutes, packs small, no ground stakes needed. Downside: not wind-rated — take it down if gusts pick up or it'll sail.
Stick-on window deflectors for the front doors. Let you crack the windows in rain without getting soaked.
Tested them during a thunderstorm at the trailhead — kept the cab dry with windows open an inch. Install is permanent tape, so you're committed.
2-inch replacement antenna. Clears garage doors and drive-throughs without the factory whip catching.
Factory antenna hit the garage door opener twice. This one's aluminum, direct thread replacement, zero clearance issues since install.
Butyl rubber sheets for reducing road noise and van resonance. Self-adhesive, goes under the floor and on panels.
Cut road noise noticeably on the highway. Takes patience to apply — you need a roller and warm weather for good adhesion. Worth the effort.
Thin thermal insulation for walls and ceiling. Better R-value per inch than foam, doesn't off-gas, fits between ribs without compression.
Space is tight in a van — every half-inch counts. This packs the most insulation into the least thickness. Pricey but effective.
Recessed aluminum track and fittings for securing cargo and furniture. Bolts to floor or walls, accepts sliding rings and D-rings.
Flexible mounting system — reconfigure tie-down points without drilling new holes. Flush mount keeps the floor flat. Install requires accuracy.
