Meanwhile: the teardrop

The van isn’t ready for a trip. The teardrop is.

A NuCamp T@G Boondock XL teardrop trailer, towed by a Subaru before this and now by a Transit with an empty cargo bay. Sleeps two if you’re friendly with each other.

Why I still use it

Because the van build is going to take months and I’m not staying home that long. The teardrop is legal, it’s weatherproof, and it doesn’t care that the van has no floor yet.

Also because towing the van taught me things about the Transit’s handling and sight lines that I wouldn’t have learned otherwise. Like that the backup camera’s guide lines don’t account for a trailer. Or that the Ecoboost has more than enough power but you feel every crosswind on the highway.

The plan

Keep the teardrop. The van covers weekend trips and project builds. The teardrop stays as the proven camper for longer trips, and two vehicles means more options for future content.

Or keep it. A van with a teardrop trailer is arguably too much sleeping space for one person, but it’s also a mobile guest room and I like the idea of rolling up to a trailhead with options.
